This article is intended for members enrolled in an individual health insurance plan.

You’re not feeling well. You go to your doctor. You walk out of your doctor’s office with a prescription.

Now what? You may have heard that you can save money on certain types of drugs like generics and by going to an in-network pharmacy. But when you don’t feel your best, you may be too worn out to even think about it. All you want to do is go home and rest.

Follow these three steps to prepare for a possible prescription ahead of time. You (and your wallet) may be glad you did.

Step 1:

Log in to your Blue Access for MembersSM (BAMSM) account, which has personalized information on your health care coverage. If you’re not already registered, it’s easy to get started. Go to and follow the instructions.

Once you’re logged in to BAM, select view prescription drug benefits from the BAM homepage.

How This Helps
You can check your prescription coverage benefits to find out ahead of time what you may need to pay to fill a prescription.

Step 2:

Register for or sign in to your account at This is the website for Prime Therapeutics, the company that manages your prescription benefits for your Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) health plan.

How This Helps
You can search for a BCBSIL network pharmacy and get drug cost estimates.

In addition, some members may have a Preferred Pharmacy Network as part of their prescription drug benefit. If included in your benefits, be sure to fill your prescriptions at these pharmacies to get the highest level of benefits. When you visit a preferred pharmacy, you may get the lowest copay or coinsurance amount.

Step 3:

When in doubt, call the customer service number on the back of your member ID card.

How This Helps
No one should feel confused when filling a prescription. If you have questions about your prescription drug benefits after looking online, call the customer service number on the back of your member ID card, and we will help answer your questions.
