Women: Choose Your Own Woman’s Principal Health Care Provider

This article is intended for HMO members enrolled in an employer health insurance plan.

Members in a Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois’ HMO plan are asked to choose a primary care physician (PCP) from a network of doctors.

But do you know that as a woman you can also choose a Woman’s Principal Health Care Provider (WPHCP)?

Sometimes women want a doctor who is specially trained in women’s health issues. A WPHCP is this type of doctor. Your WPHCP can provide or coordinate your health care services.

A WPHCP might provide health care such as breast exams or Pap tests. A WPHPC also might refer you to a specialist like an obstetrician or gynecologist.

Women do not need a PCP referral to see their WPHCP. But your WPHCP and PCP must both be affiliated with or employed by your participating Medical Group.
